IDEAL DAY

It’s Day 2 of our 12-day Countdown series - “Questions to ask about your character”

Today, we’re diving into a fun and creative exercise: What would an ideal day look like for your character? Is it filled with laughter and connection, like a picnic with their best friends? Or maybe it’s a day of solitude, where they can finally relax and recharge. Perhaps it’s achieving a lifelong goal, exploring a dream destination, or just having a quiet cup of coffee with someone they care about. The possibilities are endless, and the details can reveal so much about who they are!

Fun Thought: Take a moment to fully daydream as your character. Picture the details—what would they eat? Where would they go? Who would they spend it with (or would they prefer to be alone)? Is it a peaceful day or a day full of exciting, unexpected twists? Your imagination is your best tool here, so let it run wild!

🎭 Pro Tip for Character Development:
Understanding your character’s ideal day is a powerful way to uncover their values, desires, and priorities. Ask yourself:

  • How does their ideal day reflect their personality? Are they bold and adventurous, or calm and reflective?

  • Does their ideal day align with what they want in the story, or is it in contrast to their reality?

  • How would their ideal day change as they grow throughout the story?

  • Or would them daydreaming about an ideal day knock them out of sorts and make them start to spiral?

These type of questions can help you connect with your character’s inner world, making their journey feel richer and more relatable.

📝 Action Step: Write out your character’s ideal day as if it were a short story. Start with the moment they wake up—what does the morning look like? Where do they go? Who do they see? What do they accomplish, and how do they feel at the end of the day? There’s no right or wrong here, you’re just playing and creating.  If you want, add small details, like the way their favorite food tastes or the music they listen to during their adventure. The more vivid and specific, the better!

💡 Challenge for Your Craft: Take this exercise a step further and imagine what might disrupt their perfect day. How would they handle it? Would it ruin everything, or would they adapt? Thinking about how they react to the unexpected can give you incredible insights into their resilience, flaws, and emotional depth.

Every character has dreams—even if they seem unattainable. By exploring what makes a perfect day for your character, you’ll tap into their humanity and bring more heart to your performance.
