MIRACLES
“12 Questions to Ask About Your Character.”
Today, we’re talking about miracles. Every great character has a moment when they’re forced to believe that something magical—or seemingly impossible—is actually possible. Maybe it’s a turning point where their hope is restored, or maybe it’s the moment they let go of their cynicism and take a leap of faith.
🌟 Deep Dive: What about you? Do you believe in miracles, or do you lean more toward the Grinch side of life—skeptical and wary of life’s little wonders? Now think about your character:
What does your character consider a miracle? Is it something big like winning a fight against all odds, or something small like reconnecting with someone they love?
How does your character respond to the idea of magic, hope, or unexpected good fortune? Do they embrace it, resist it, or dismiss it completely?
What would happen if your character allowed themselves to believe something amazing could happen? How might it change their decisions, mindset, or relationships?
🎭 Pro Tip for Character Development:
Moments of belief (or disbelief) are powerful in storytelling. These moments reveal a lot about a character’s emotional depth and growth. Ask yourself:
Has my character lost hope, and what would restore it for them?
How does their past affect their ability to believe in something bigger than themselves?
Is there a moment in their story where they experience a “miracle” (big or small), and how does that shift them?
These type of questions can help you bring more nuance to your performance, especially in scenes of transformation, hope, or surprise.
💡 Challenge for Your Craft: Play with both sides of belief in your next scene or character prep. First, improv a moment where your character completely rejects the possibility of a miracle—let their skepticism or frustration show. Then try again, this time letting them be open, vulnerable, and willing to believe in something amazing. Notice how each version changes your physicality, tone, and emotions.
Life—and storytelling—is full of little wonders, whether we notice them or not. Bring that magic into your character work, and you’ll find performances that feel authentic, surprising, and deeply human.
