Acting in Verticals
The Rise of Verticals: Why Actors Should Get Involved
Verticals are taking over the industry, and they're not just for influencers—they're creating real opportunities for actors. Think of them as the modern-day soap opera: fast, engaging, and designed for mobile audiences.
Whether you're gaining experience on set, or trying to become the next vertical star, Verticals offer a unique platform for actors to showcase their skills and reach new audiences.
What Are Verticals?
Verticals are short-form videos (often full series) designed for mobile viewing on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and dedicated apps such as DramaBox and ReelShort.
Typically under 90 seconds per episode, they require actors to:
Grab attention immediately in the first few seconds
Convey character, emotion, and intent quickly
Adapt performance to mobile camera framing
Unlike traditional film and television, Verticals demand immediate engagement and clear storytelling. Actors must make strong choices quickly while maintaining believable performances.
Production schedules are also incredibly fast-paced. A single season can contain the equivalent of a feature film's worth of material, with each short episode contributing to a larger ongoing story. As a result, actors must be prepared to work efficiently, make quick adjustments, and deliver consistent performances under tight deadlines.
Why Actors Should Audition for Verticals
Verticals aren't just a trend—they've become a legitimate avenue for actors. With SAG-AFTRA recently adding their own Verticals Agreement supporting this format, performers can pursue these projects with (or without) professional representation and protections.
Gaining exposure: Social platforms offer massive reach, often to global audiences
Expanding experience: Quick, focused projects allow actors to practice character work and storytelling efficiently
Fast filming schedule: Shooting multiple episodes quickly can gives actors high-volume on set experience in a short time
How to Approach Vertical Auditions
The fundamentals remain the same—understanding your character, relationships, and stakes.
Stakes are often life or death in verticals. Social Class is usually very relevant.
Remember, dress to suggest the role you are auditioning for!
The more specific and intentional your choices are, the more memorable and believable your performance becomes—even within heightened circumstances.
As Vertical content continues to expand, actors who understand the format will be better prepared when these auditions come their way. Our upcoming Vertical Intensive helps actors develop the audition techniques, confidence, and practical skills needed to succeed in this unique medium.
